History of the Local History Branch Building
On April 6, 1908 voters in LaGrange Township in Cass County, Michigan voted to build a new township library building in Cassopolis, Michigan. The building cost was $10,000, which was a gift from Andrew Carnegie.
According to the local newspaper, the "Cassopolis Vigilant," the building, built on 145 Broadway, was designed by: " Architect Young of South Bend," and the contractor H. G. Rosewarne of Mishawaka, Indiana.
The building took several months to complete, and was opened in June 1909. Mrs. Stella Kingsbury was the first librarian to work in the building. Initially, the building housed 1500 volumes, which were donated by the Ladies Library Association of Cassopolis.
On October 4, 1994, the building re-opened as the Cass District Library-- Local History Branch
